Somalia, Turkey ink deal to cooperate in fisheries sector
The agreement establishes a centralized, sustainable, and fully registered framework for fisheries activities in Somalia. Under the accord, SOMTURK, a company created within this framework, will manage all licensing processes for fisheries in Somalia’s exclusive economic zone, with fishing permits in territorial waters issued exclusively by SOMTURK.
The partnership is designed to promote sustainable use of Somalia’s abundant marine resources while granting Türkiye access to Somali waters, considered among the world’s richest fishing grounds. Beyond economic, commercial, and technical cooperation, the agreement aims to generate revenue supporting OYAK’s sustainable return objectives, increase employment through fish processing and related industries, strengthen the local economy, and ensure benefits reach the Somali population.
Somali Minister Nur described the agreement on social media as a “milestone (that) reflects the strong partnership and mutual trust between our two sides, and underscores our shared commitment to sustainable development and economic cooperation.”
